Zero to Sixty in 6 seconds

The tomato seedlings are bowing to the heat
while I face my own in a warm office,
the neighbor waters the plants at 2:30 p.m..
I'm cleaning up the mess at work, co-workers

who don't respond, those who are
curt or even insulting, I don't understand them,
the flour and asteroid rocks are scattered across the table,
is my face all red from rage or the

hot flashes that visit often, the heat from the
computer screen, my door is closed to keep out
the buzz of human interaction, even those I like.
He's talking about micrometeoroids and LIDAR,

that I still don't quite understand, except it's
a way to look down at our exquisite earth
and notice how much she is warming, from
9 degrees and a foot of snow to 85 degrees

in 6 seconds on some time scale.
No wonder the tomatoes bow their heads in sorrow
and outside, riding home, I know the real
reason for my flushed face. It's hot.
