Writing papers sometime in the future

the future arrives
and we wonder that we have committed
such folly, always thinking it will be easier,
not take so many words, so much rewording
and rewriting and time consuming minutiae,
the references, the figures, the clear train of thought
that seemed so compelling months ago, now
murky and uncertain, maybe ridiculous,
definitely not compelling
but we're committed now,
the future is now, tonight,
before our beds will embrace
us its cozy arms.
