an autistic boy

he didn't understand himself
even though his ear was only a hose
length's away
he heard a voice a muttering of strange syllables
like, but not the same, as the ones barraging his ears, his eyes,
his face, his fingers and toes every day
every night
theykeeptalking
stop, please stop
at least the talking stops when he wants
somehow
how soothing
his arms and legs stop
his face relaxes
he drifts off
mumbling words only he understands
