Luxuries

Luxuries

The luxury of sitting
at my kitchen dinette, crowded
with white wine, fancy
tape dispensers,
Page-a-Day Poems,
notecards and custom pens,
fresh cut watermelon,
while across the world,
a one year old child weighs
in at nine pounds, a man
is killed for opposing the
dictatorial regime in his country,
women can’t go outside without
a male companion.
The luxury of being American,
of being able to get an education,
the opportunity to be able
to make a life for yourself.
The luxury of hope.
