Kitchen Campfires

The flames leapt up from the stove,
warming the kitchen still chilled from
the night.
The smoke billowed forth from the
burner, glowing orange under the
wooden cheese plate,
the fire alarm blaring in the living room..
Not a good way to start the morning,
and my oatmeal not even warm.
The dogs started barking, the rabbits
ran away, and as I rushed to open every
window in the house, the kitchen
still chilled from the night became
yet more cold in the early dawn.
Kitchen campfires are not a good way
to heat up a kitchen.
