To be clear, this country has a long way to go in terms of development. Certainly 400 years of slavery and French interference (on-going in some way), corruption and lack of long term planning all play a big role. The perseverance of those who can look forward is inspiring. Getting population growth under control will also be important. By caring for children, only then can we hope that they can contribute to their country's emergence. Without them, there is no future.

The Children's School and the ravages of poverty
The poverty here is pretty overwhelming. In particular, this school for children takes place in a cement building. Looking up, I see gaping holes in the ceiling. The girls sit on one mat, the boys on another, all very quiet, some with noses running. These children suffer. One may question whether it is wise for women to have so many children, but they are here and with limited sums, this building could at least be somewhat improved. I offered some money, but also hope to give my friends and family an easy way to donate for this school. A small sum can make a huge difference to these kids.
